Burning Coal Theatre will present B’rukhim Haba’im: Stories of Welcome, an exhibit of filmed autobiographical stories by 21 Jewish seniors from across the Triangle, this summer at City of Raleigh Museum.

B’rukhim Haba’im: Stories of Welcome will run June 28 through September 4, 2022 at the City of Raleigh Museum.

The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday 9 am to 4 pm and Sunday from 1 pm to 4 pm.

The tales mark the culmination of a month-long storytelling workshop, a community outreach project funded by a grant from the Carolina Foundation for Jewish Seniors and private donors.

Project Director Staci Sabarsky helped participants from across the Triangle develop their stories for a month in sessions over Zoom. The seniors were then professionally filmed in individual sessions at Burning Coal Theatre.

Their stories will be shown on 20 separate screens distributed throughout the COR Museum’s main lobby commonly called Raleigh’s Living Room on the museum’s first floor.

The Life of Galileo by Bertolt Brecht, adapted by David Edgar, tells the story of a man of science who was willing to challenge the most powerful structures on earth … up to a point. Was he right to do so? Should he have gone further? What are we to take from his story?

“No, it isn’t possible for people to fly. It would need some kind of mechanical device, which doesn’t exist yet. Perhaps it never will. But of course, we can’t know that. We don’t know nearly enough, in fact. We’re really just at the beginning.”

The program takes place on-site at Dorothea Dix Park, right around the corner from the performance. Students will be checked-in before the show, stay engaged and supervised by Seed Art Share’s professional team, and checked-out after the show. ABOUT BERTOLT BRECHT AND DAVID EDGAR

Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956) was a German theatre practitioner, playwright, and poet known for being a leading theoretician of epic theatre, also called dialectical theatre, and the “distancing effect”. His prolific works include Mother Courage And Her Children and The Good Person of Szechwan, which were often used to express his opposition to the Nazi Socialist and Fascist movements.

David Edgar is a contemporary British playwright is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, former president of the Writers Guild of Britain, and has been an honorary associate artist of the Royal Shakespeare Company since 1989. His works include the well-known adaptation of Dickens’ Nicholas Nickleby, and three works set in Eastern Europe titled The Shape of the Table, Pentecost, and The Prisoner’s Dilemma – which Burning Coal performed in repertory as The Iron Curtain Trilogy.

French playwright Yasmina Reza’s comic masterpiece about three middle aged men, long-time friends, whose seemingly inseparable bond is torn when one of them decides suddenly to purchase an abstract painting, a completely white canvas. Since it premiered in France in 1994, Art has been translated into numerous languages and has won many awards for best comedy, including the Olivier Award for its premiere production in London (starring Albert Finney, Tom Courtenay and Ken Stott) and the Tony Award for its Broadway premiere (starring Alan Alda, Alfred Molina and Victor Garber).

ABOUT YASMINA REZA

Yasmina Reza is a playwright, screenwriter, author, and actress from Paris, France. Yasmina attended the University of Paris and studied at Jacque Lecoq’s school of drama. She has written nine plays, ten novels, and four screenplays. Much of her writing focuses on the experiences and issues of the contemporary middle class. Many of her plays have gone on to be translated and have been performed in over thirty languages. She has received four Molière awards, the French equivalent of Tony awards, and two Tony awards, both of which were for “Best Play”. Her other works include the plays Scenes from a Burial and God of Carnage, the screenplay for the movie Carnage (2011), an award-winning translation of Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis (1988), and the novel Babylone (2016).
