Each year Burning Coal hosts an intensive conservatory for  students from 7th to 12th grades.

SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY

In the town of Spoon River, the dead tell tales. This year’s STC cohort performs Edward Lee Master’s poetic classic play as a culmination of the circus and acting techniques taught by Time Flies Circus and guest artists. Each student inhabits at least one of 212 separate characters, who share their unabashed feelings about each other and the meaning of life.

Each student will receive 2 complimentary tickets. As a COVID precaution, we will ask for RSVPs in advance for all audience members. Additional tickets will go on sale soon, and are $10 each.

STC Sr. is our intensive, three-week conservatory for high school students interested in rigorous, professional training.

Students grades 7 – 12  may apply.  No previous theatre experience is required.

This year, the conservatory will be led by the aerial circus team Time Flies Circus, from Brooklyn, NY.

STC, Sr. consists of morning classes with guest artists from across the state’s myriad professional theatres and educational institutions and afternoon rehearsals for a classic or modern classic play (This year Spoon River Anthology).

GUEST ARTISTS will also conduct classes during the conservatory.  Past teaching artists from colleges and professional theatres around the state have included:

Carl Forsman [UNC-School of the Arts] – Shakespeare Text
John Gulley [UNCG] – Meisner Technique
Jo Hall [Greensboro College] – Fitzmaurice/Berry

Fee: $425, with $100 due upon application and the remainder due by the first day of class. Partial scholarships available upon request.

$425  DUE $100 deposit with application, remainder due by audition deadline, June 24.

Eligibility:

Students in grades 9-12 as well as college freshmen. Students grades 6-8 may apply for STC, Sr. if they have previous theatre experience and prefer an advanced group.
