Crowns The Musical by Regina Taylor is adapted from the book by Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry. Burning Coal’s high-energy staging at the Murphey School Auditorium, directed by Rebecca Holderness, is full of incredible songs that draw deeply from African American musical traditions. It tells the story of a teenage girl’s spiritual awakening as she is sent from Brooklyn to stay with her grandmother in the South after a family tragedy. The play takes place over a single day at church and features a wedding, a funeral and a baptism.
