NEXT MEETING:
TBA
7pm
The Lab was founded in 2004 in order to encourage the creation of new work for performance by NC playwrights and attract new and exciting artists to the area. It was expanded in 2008 by current LAB directors Sylvia Mallory and Johannah Maynard to include directors. The idea is to start playwrights thinking more like directors and directors thinking more like playwright. The Lab is a workshop environment where group members can give and receive constructive criticism on works-in-progress. In addition to regular meetings, Lab members also present local public readings of new plays, and send their work on for production at professional theatres. Lab members come from diverse backgrounds, but tend to be artists with at least one professional production or publication. Membership is by invitation or referral, and interested playwrights and directors from North Carolina are welcome to apply.
MISSION STATEMENT
The Lab at Burning Coal will support and generate new and original works by developing artists in our community. The goal is to provide a forum for new theatrical possibilities and growth as a way to develop literate, visceral, affecting theater that is experienced not simply seen. The Lab functions as an opportunity for playwrights, directors, and actors to generate new work in a supportive workshop environment where group members can give and receive feedback through different and innovative processes.
Occasionally writers' work will be presented in fully staged performances "without decor" on Sunday evenings.
