Burning Coal Theatre in Raleigh, NC

Burning Coal Theatre is a professional theatre, which means we pay our artists. Every year, Burning Coal Theatre auditions local and national talent for plays and performances in our location in Downtown Raleigh, NC. See below for more information. 

If you feel you might have been exposed to Covid in the week prior to the auditions, please test before coming in.

If you are unable to attend in-person auditions, click here to submit a video audition  by May 9th at 11:59 PM (more details below).  

Open Call Auditions will take place at 224 Polk St. Raleigh, NC 27604 on May 11th,  2024 from 9 am to 6pm. In-person auditions are preferred. 

Please prepare a 1-minute contemporary monologue and 32 bars maximum of a song. An accompanist will be provided. Bring printed sheet music in your key and two copies of your headshot and resume.

Callbacks will be scheduled on an individual basis. If you are not cast this season, we will keep your resume on file (although we recommend re-auditioning annually to keep your records up to date).

Being Chaka, by Tara Amber, Chuk Obasi, and Nalini Sharma

  • CHAKA (15-25) Black. 16-year-old high school transfer student trying to adjust to his new school. Actor must look like he can play a teenager. Actor must be very comfortable with rap/ spoken word poetry cadence.
  • KUNZANG (15-25) Asian or Latine. 16-year-old high school student with a semi-hidden passion for music. Actor must look like she can play a teenager. Actor must be a strong singer.
  • ETHAN (15-25) White. 16-year-old high school student. Maddy’s twin brother.  Actor must look like he can play a teenager.
  • MADDY (15-25) White. 16-year-old high school student. Ethan’s twin sister. 
    Actor must look like she can play a teenager.
  • ANNALISA (55-65) Black or Black/ Bi-racial (Note: character is part Native American while passing as African American). Any gender. History teacher. (Note: Name would be adjusted if cast as a male).
  • GUNNAR (45-65) White. Wise-cracking, laid back and loveable gym teacher. Actor must know how to play guitar OR any handheld instrument.
  • MS. K (35-45) Indian/ Southeast Asian. High School Principal.
  • INAYA (35-55) Mother of Chaka and widow. 
  • CAROLINE (35-55) White. Divorced, wealthy mother of Ethan and Maddy, and influential school board member.
  • WILLY (25-45) Young parent trapped in his grief over the loss of his only child. Husband to Purilla.
  • PURILLA (25-45) Young parent trapped in her grief over the loss of her only child. Wife to Willy. Actor must be a strong physical mover.
