A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Written by William Shakespeare

Directed by David Henderson

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is Shakespeare’s beloved comic romp about the magic and mystery of art and love. It follows several seemingly different stories, Puck and his master Oberon, Peter Quince’s men (the ragtag band of “Rude Mechanicals” who attempt to put on a play with disastrous results, and two pair of young lovers, Helena and Lysander, Hermia, Helena. Shakespeare sends all of them into the forest, where their best laid plans do indeed go astray. Puck rebels against his master, the aptly named ‘Bottom’ is turned into an ass, and the lovers are paired up with the wrong partner. Shakespeare’s point is that art and love are utterly unpredictable and the more we try to make either so the more unhappy we are likely to be.
